Self-Care Strategies: Take Advantage of Holiday Deals to Improve Your Well-Being

Add one more person to your holiday shopping list this season — yourself. To avoid getting run down, burned out, and ill, you have to take care of yourself, physically, emotionally, and mentally. Spend a little money on yourself this holiday season and boost your well-being too. Find items that will benefit you this holiday season and well into the new year.

Set Up a Dedicated Meditation or Yoga Space

Your mental health is as important as your physical health. Simple self-care techniques can go a long way in terms of improving your mental health and happiness. Stress reduction is key, and doing meditation or yoga regularly can be the stress-buster you need. If you find that you never make time for these relaxing practices, maybe it’s because you don’t have an at-home space. Carve out a room or even just a corner in your house dedicated to your “me time.”

Start out by repainting the area in cool, muted colors. Use an eco-friendly, non-toxic paint to create a healthy environment. Next, set the mood with relaxing decor and lighting. You can find awesome deals online for home décor and the other items you need during Cyber Monday, and the other sales leading up to Christmas.

If you aren’t dedicating an entire room, separate your space with some lightweight curtains or a room divider. Install a dimmer switch for your overhead light, so you can soften the light to your preferred level. Shop for candles, statues, plants, and other items that will add to the calming nature of your space. Finally, add a yoga mat, blankets, pillows, and whatever else you need for your practice. Having a dedicated space in your home will not only increase the chance that you’ll practice yoga and/or meditation regularly, but it will also provide a calm atmosphere that will deepen your relaxation and help relieve your stress.

Get a Better Night’s Sleep

Insufficient sleep negatively affects physical health, mental health, and overall well-being. According to the Good Body, 35 percent of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of sleep – at least seven hours each night – and nearly 20 percent of adults in the U.S. have some sort of sleep disorder. If you are not getting enough quality sleep, it’s time to do something about it. Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening hours, and set your bedroom up for sleep success. Remove all distractions, such as TVs and electronics, and make your bedroom as dark and comfortable as possible. Shop for blackout curtains, cozy pillows, plush blankets, and other items to enhance your sleeping space.

Exercise Regularly

Fuel your body and mind by engaging in regular exercise and eating a healthy diet. If you are a runner, it can be tough in the wintertime to keep up with your outdoor routine. Splurge on a gym membership as a Christmas gift to yourself or bring your running sessions indoors with a new treadmill.

Though it might seem selfish to splurge on yourself over the holidays, sometimes you need to spend a little money on self-care. If you don’t take care of yourself, physically and mentally, you won’t be capable of taking care of the ones you love or be able to enjoy the holiday season.
